How To Improve Your Keyword Research For SEO

What is SEO keyword research?

SEO keyword research is a method used by businesses and SEO professionals around the world to identify what their audiences are interested in. Companies use this to find out what phrases or words are popular with their target audiences to be able to rank higher in search engines, therefore making their websites more visible to potential clients.

Why is it important?

When searching online, most people don’t type lengthy or detailed queries. Instead, the majority of people just type certain keywords that are related to their questions to get more results and options to choose from.

This is why SEO keyword research is so crucial: You get your page more visibility by adding or using common and relevant words or phrases that attract a wider audience to your website while you’re also considering the relative competitiveness of target keywords.

The whole purpose of SEO keyword research is to get higher rankings on search engines such as Google, increase organic traffic and grab the attention of your visitors who might become long-term loyal customers of your business.

So, where do you start? Here are some tips on how to execute.

1. Use keyword research tools.

There are many tools available online to see your competitors’ statistics. Use this to your advantage, as many third-party tools show what keywords your competitors are targeting to get more visitors and future customers.

One of the most popular free keyword research tools is Google Keyword Planner. This is a free keyword research tool that shows monthly search volume, relevant long-tail keywords and search trends.

Popular and more advanced third-party tools like SEMrush, Ahrefs and Ubersuggest provide a more extensive list of possible long-tail keywords and give comprehensive statistical insight into the industry and keywords you are targeting.

At my company, we use a mixture of these tools to find the hidden gems on a weekly basis

2. Select the ‘right’ keywords.

Use keyword tools to find popular keywords with high search volume and low keyword difficulty (KD) when searching for related and targetable keywords. This can help you narrow down your options in terms of the right keywords that aren’t too general or specific.

If the keywords are too general, such as “computer,” it will be too difficult for your content to realistically rank for them since you have to compete with global corporations. What’s more, the traffic generated from these general keywords may not be the type of visitors you want to attract.

If the keywords are too specific, it will be easier for you to rank at the top of the search engines, but they’ll also have such low search volume that your content likely won’t be worth spending time on.

Selecting the right keywords or phrases can help you slowly dominate, stabilize and increase your organic traffic from visitors looking for the same topics, products or services

3. Remember, priority is the key.

If you’ve made a list of phrases and keywords you want to use, it is now time to make them searchable.

Prioritize your list of keywords with the following ideas in mind: relevancy, high search volume and low keyword difficulty. If you play around with keyword research tools, you’ll often find yourself bombarded with an unlimited number of keywords with various word combinations and synonyms. Prioritize them and use them in high-quality content that is worth spending time reading.

4. Benchmark your competitors.

Are there any competitors or industry leaders you’d like to outrank? Type in their URL in Google Keyword Planner and see what keywords they are targeting.

Depending on the competitiveness of the keywords, you will need to make a decision whether to target the same keyword or an entirely different keyword to be outside of the competition. Use your competitors’ information to your advantage.

Conclusion

There was a time when you could write a blog post, and it would rank at the top of search engines and start generating a ton of organic and free traffic. That time is long gone.

However, with the advent of modern research tools, the internet is becoming a place of opportunity for those who know how to use the tools properly. Spend time playing around with the tools and gaining insights, and you will soon find yourself getting more emails and calls.
